Research activity has always been linked to security and cybersecurity.
Starting in the field of Computer Networks and System Administration during the graduation and master's degree programs, and then moving to cryptography applied to resource-constrained devices (wireless sensor networks) during the doctoral program (PhD).
After PhD, for various reasons, the research focused closely on real-world scenarios and concrete issues regarding cybersecurity and the fight against cybercrime. Adopting an applied science perspective, that led to collaborations with various police, military, and state security organizations - most notably the Portuguese Criminal Police, Interpol, the Portuguese National Security Agency, and the Portuguese Armed Forces.
Two activities are highlighted that positively—and uniquely—distinguish the professional path: (i) in 2012, joining the Organizing Committee of the National Cybersecurity Center; (ii) in 2022 (and through 2026), participation in the establishment of the Cyber Defense School in partnership with the General Staff of the Armed Forces.
Currently, research activities focus on three complementary and interrelated vectors: (i) Disinformation (in a broad sense... including fake news and variants of fraud, among others...); (ii) Affective Computing; and (iii) Cybersecurity Classification Systems.
In a more technical (or educational) context, activities are distributed across the following areas: Communication Network Security; Penetration Testing; Cryptography; and, broadly speaking, Cybersecurity Technologies and Networking Technologies.
